India July edible oil imports fall to 532,456 tonnes; Q3 imports down 14 pct

MUMBAI (Thomson Financial) – India’s edible oil imports in July fell to 532,456 tonnes, from 548,908 a year earlier, and non-edible oil imports rose to 38,939 tonnes from 32,688 tonnes in July 2007, according to The Solvent Extractors’ Association of India.
But vegetable oil imports between May and July fell 14 percent year-on-year to about 1.53 million tonnes, the Following a slowdown in vegetable oil imports during April and May 2008, June imports increased to 593,730 tonnes, the trade body said.
The overall import of vegetable oil during the first nine months of the oil year, from November 2007 to July 2008, rose to 4.14 million tonnes from 3.78 million tonnes a year earlier, showing a rise of nine percent, the association said.
In view of the lean crushing season, the import of vegetable oil is likely to be 0.55 million tonnes to 0.6 million per month in the next three to four months until the summer sown oilseeds crop is available for crushing in November 2008, the trade association added.
