Sahara India Wins Reprieve From Central Bank’s Ban

June 6 (Bloomberg) — Sahara India Financial Corp., the nation’s largest finance firm by deposits, won temporary reprieve from an Indian court on the central bank’s order barring it from accepting more funds.

“The complete order has been stayed till the last week of July,” Prashant Chandra, a lawyer for Sahara India, said by telephone today. The order was passed by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court. Read the rest of this entry »

Inflation Jumps to 8.24%; Fastest Since 2004

June 6 (Bloomberg) — Inflation jumped to 8.24 percent, the fastest since August 2004, adding pressure on the central bank to raise interest rates.

Wholesale-price gains accelerated for a seventh straight week through May 24, after increasing 8.1 percent in the previous week, the commerce ministry said in a statement in New Delhi today. Analysts had forecast inflation at 8.29 percent. Read the rest of this entry »

Reliance says fire broke out at petchem unit

NEW DELHI, June 6 (Reuters) – Reliance Industries Ltd (RELI.BO: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Friday a fire had broken out during a maintenance shutdown at a unit in its petrochemical plant at Nagothane in western India, killing four people.

“Fire broke out at 11:20 a.m in our LLDPE unit. The unit was under routine maintenance shutdown since last two days”, a Reliance spokesman said.

He said four workers have died. The capacity of the unit was not immediately known. Source Reuters

Fire shuts fertiliser plant of Aditya Birla

MUMBAI, June 6 (Reuters) – Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd (ABRL.BO: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Friday it has shut its fertiliser plant in north India due to a fire in a gas compressor turbine.

The diversified firm, with interests in textiles, financial services, telecoms and chemicals, said in a statement it was assessing the damage and preliminary inspections had revealed a restart would be possible in two weeks. Source Reuters

Anil Ambani group eyeing SpiceJet

MUMBAI, June 6 (Reuters) – Anil Dhirubhai Ambani group (ADAG) has begun talks to buy low-cost carrier SpiceJet (SPJT.BO: Quote, Profile, Research), the Mint daily reported on Friday, without attributing any source.

Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways Ltd (JET.BO: Quote, Profile, Research) are also in the race to buy SpiceJet, which is looking to raise funds, the newspaper said. Read the rest of this entry »

Sevan Marine says to be awarded $569 million drilling contract by ONGC

OSLO (Thomson Financial) – Sevan Marine ASA said it expects to be awarded a three-year drilling contract by India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), worth $569 million.

While a letter of intent is still to be signed, Sevan said Indian state oil and gas firm ONGC has informed it that has won the recent contract bidding process. Source CNBC

State Bank of India, Societe Generale sign jv for custody services

MUMBAI (Thomson Financial) – State Bank of India Ltd. said it signed a joint venture agreement on Thursday with Societe Generale Group unit Societe Generale Securities Services to offer custody and related services in India.

Punj Lloyd wins 6.49 bln rupee refinery upgrade contract from IOC

MUMBAI (Thomson Financial) – India’s Punj Lloyd Ltd. said it has won a 6.49 billion rupee contract to help upgrade Indian Oil Corp. Ltd.’s (IOC) Barauni refinery.

In a regulatory filing, the company said the turnkey contract — towards improving quality of the refinery’s motor spirit (gasoline) to meet Euro-III norms — entails engineering, procurement and construction services.

It is scheduled to be commissioned within 23 months. Source CNBC

Essar Steel considers raising bid for Esmark

NEW YORK – Essar Steel Holdings Ltd. said Friday it is considering increasing its $17-per-share bid for steelmaker and distributor Esmark Inc.
